Can’t Decide Between the Wordbench, the Pressville and the TownPress?

Let us start by saying that if you are deciding for a theme for your municipality site, all three of these themes will do a great job. They are built exactly for this! When it comes to list of features, all three themes are very similar. They are all bundled with essential LSVR plugins for events, directory listings, documents, galleries, person directory and more. The backend of these themes is almost indistinguishable from each other. Same applies to the code quality. They are very developer friendly, everything can be customized via a child theme. The biggest difference between all three is the design.

The Wordbench being the newest one from the three, offers most modern design and it also comes with some unique features like FAQ and testimonials. It contains the most elements which can be used to build your homepage and you can also choose from multiple layouts for your post archive pages (e.g. news, events). It also scales very well on all screen sizes, from very big desktop displays to mobile devices. It really is the ultimate municipality WordPress theme.

The Pressville is sort of a middle ground between Wordbench and TownPress. It is a great choice if you have many high quality photos of your municipality or some nice stock photos in general. It is ideal for bigger municipalities which want their site to be focused more on showcasing the city towards potential tourists or visitors.

Even though the TownPress was released back in 2015 (so you may think it is a bit dated), the TownPress 2.0 update was released in January 2018. This major update was basically a complete rework of the theme from the scratch. This theme is a great choice for municipal sites aimed mainly at providing as much information as possible for their residents. You can use two sidebars at once and there is a higher text density, so you can display a lot of information without making your pages too long to scroll. This is more traditional approach to a municipality website, especially great for smaller municipalities, which do not necessary have a lot of high quality photos suitable for the web.
